Save Your Vision Month

| Melissa Weisenberger

March marks Save Your Vision Month. This month is dedicated to educating the public on how to prevent vision loss and injury to the eyes.

According to a study, 142 million Americans over the age of 40 experience vision issues and even more surprising, 15.9 million Americans use corrective lenses. 1 This is an overwhelming statistic. What could be causing these issues? Could it be the overuse of electronics, staying up too late watching television, or looking into the sun without sunglass protection?

There are many reasons for eye health issues, but the most common are the following:

  • Computers at work and home: Eight hours a day at home and work can produce strained eyes and other symptoms. At work you may be staring at your screen for hours, then come home and stare at the TV. Studies have been shown that an individual does not blink at a normal rate; it tends to slow down. Make sure you rest your eyes when you come home from work. Lastly, place your computer 20 inches away from your eyes.1
  • Not wearing the right lenses: This will end up straining your eyes as you have to continually squint.
  • Not wearing sunglasses outdoors: This leads to squinting and it can also ruin your eyesight over time.
  • Not regularly seeing your ophthalmologist or optometrist: An annual visit can help prevent many eye diseases. They also perform a thorough history, including a family background to educate on any risks of developing eyesight issues.

Your eyes help you see and experience life. They are a critical component to balance and can help you stay safe and independent in your home. We recommend scheduling your annual exam today. Keep your eyes healthy!

Stay Educated and Healthy!
