Celebrating Older Americans Month

| Dr. Eva Norman

Older Americans Month 2014In May we are celebrating Older Americans Month! We are seeing more and more centenarian’s joining the forces of the senior population in America. We can proudly say that there is very good evidence that this population is growing happening because seniors are taking a proactive approach in their health and safety. The focus on this month’s celebration of older Americans is on senior safety.

So how can physical therapy make you safer as a senior? There are a lot of ways we work with you to increase your overall quality of life and safety. Live Your Life Physical Therapy, LLC is proud to serve many seniors in the Twin Cities area. We offer a multtude of programs to help keep seniors both safe and healthy. Did you know that nearly one in three seniors age 65+ will experience a fall each year[1]? The good news is that with the proper care and training these falls can often be prevented. Our Live Your Life FALL FREE program focuses on endurance, strength, balance and coordination. We will also recommend various changes that you can make in your home and your life to help prevent falls and keep you steady on your feet. The best part is we come to you to teach you how to feel safe when moving around and enjoy your life safely. We can serve individuals or provide group sessions on Fall Prevention.

We also want you to be able to continue driving for as long as possible. However, we want you driving safely! If you are a senior
Older Americans Monthdriver we offer a spectacular program that is geared towards the specific skills you need to drive as you age. Our Live Your Life DRIVING SAFELY program focuses on driving related skills like:

        • Gait
        • Cognition
        • Balance
        • Vision
        • Balance
        • Motor Function

In some cases you can even receive a discount on your insurance by participating in safe driving  programs. Check with your insurance to see if they offer such discounts. Either way, feeling more confident behind the wheel of your car is just another way to ensure your safety and the safety of those you love. Just because you’re a senior doesn’t mean you should give up your right to drive if you still have the ability to do it safely.

A very important part of staying safe as a senior is keeping active. Staying active will help keep you strong and increase your stamina. LYLPT offers a number of wellness programs that are based specifically on your needs and abilities. We will come to your home or wherever you feel most comfortable for a comprehensive assessment of  your health. We will then provide you with a customized program to make you stronger and healthier. Staying active can help your overall well being, improve your mental state, and help eliminate pain.

Older Americans month is a time for us to realize the importance and significance that our seniors play in our world. Understanding how important it is to keep our seniors safe is the key to setting aside the month of May and celebrate their importance to our communities. Accidents and unintended injuries affect 6 million plus older Americans every year and account for more than 300,000 deaths.[2] Focusing on keeping our seniors safe can not only help save lives but bring these statistics to light for many who simply don’t realize how fragile our older Americans can be and how important it is to not only keep them safe but work with them to help them be strong and healthy. Allowing seniors to take control of their lives and participate in programs that will not only help them feel better but live safer is the key. Call Live Your Life Physical Therapy today to see how we can help you Live Your Life SAFER during Older Americans Month.
