Could a Balance Test Help Determine Health Risks?

Balance Test

A recent article in Neurology Times has indicated that something as simple and easy as testing one’s balance can help determine if they are at risk for certain health issues and, in particular, Small Vessel Disease (SVD); which is known to lead to other health problems as you age. Your physical therapist can perform a balance test in the comfort of your home to help determine if you are at risk for these known problems often associated with SVD:

  • Stroke
  • Falls
  • Brain Disease
  • Vascular Dementia
  • Behavioral Changes
  • Cognitive Decline
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Somatic Symptom Disorders
  • High Blood Pressure

The study[1] used a one legged postural instability test, along with MRI’s to determine if lack of postural stability could be related to certain health issues, in particular those that become more prevalent as we age. It is to be noted that SVD is a disease that can cause decreased quality of life allowing the medical field to watch for possible problems even before they may present themselves.

Reduce Your Risk

Create a lifestyle that can help reduce your risks of health problems associated with postural instability:

  • Blood Pressure – Keeping a close eye on your blood pressure is one way to ensure knowing if SVD is present; as high blood pressure is generally present with small vessel disease.
  • Cholesterol – Diet and exercise play a large role in your cholesterol levels, along with genetics. Stay active, while eating a balanced healthy diet.
  • Balance –Seek out advice from a physical therapist or physician to see if there is a physical cause creating this postural instability. Enroll in a program that can help you regain your balance.
  • Strength –At the age of 30 our body’s muscle begins to decline, it’s important to focus on muscle building programs to help maintain a healthy balance while keeping active.

These are just a few ways that you can battle health risks associated with postural instability and some of the inevitable changes we may face as we age. A healthy lifestyle includes physical fitness, mental fitness and a healthy diet. It’s a good time to make your life the best it can be by taking care of your entire being; body, mind and soul.
