Heart Disease, Stroke and Cancer Deaths are on the Decline

| Dr. Jessica Berglund

With the holiday season upon us and a New Year right around the corner, it is important to keep your health in mind. The CDC recently reported some positive health data, stating that the number of potentially preventable deaths caused by three of the leading causes of death in the US have finally started to decline.1 Heart disease, cancer, and stroke deaths have decreased between the years 2010 through 2014. 2 The study included adults age 80 or less who live in the U.S. and offers uplifting news on the topic of chronic disease.

If you could prevent chronic diseases or decrease your risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke, would you? The time for prevention is now and you can start today! The CDC recommends the following lifestyle habits for prevention of heart disease, cancer and stroke:

  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Getting enough exercise
  • Not smoking
  • Limiting alcohol use

Ask yourself these 5 questions:

  1. Do you eat 5 fruits and vegetables EVERY DAY?
  2. Do you maintain a healthy weight for your body with a BMI of 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 ?
  3. Do you engage in 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity EVERY WEEK?
  4. Are you living a tobacco-free life?
  5. Are you drinking 1-2 drinks or less per day?

If you answered YES to all 5 questions then Congratulations! You are engaging in the 5 healthy lifestyle habits for decreasing your risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke. If you answered NO to any or all of those questions then there is potential for improvement in your lifestyle habits. Deciding how and where to start can be daunting and overwhelming, and often leads to difficulty with sticking to your lifestyle changes.
