The Older Driver

| Dr. Eva Norman

Did you know that as an individual ages, their physical, sensory and mental abilities also change over time?  As one gets older, these changes can present challenges to a person’s driving ability. Occupational therapists (OTs) can help empower people to lead independent and productive lives by working with individuals across their lifespan to help them perform daily living activities that have been lost or changed.

An occupational therapist can identify challenges and provide rehabilitation to help others in staying active, independent and safe within their environment. They are trained to assess and evaluate a person’s overall capability to drive a vehicle safely.

The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) is promoting Older Driver Safety Week this week to provide an awareness and understanding on how important it is to be mobile to ensure that older adults can stay active within their community.1

We can help you or a loved become a safer driver through our Live Your Life DRIVING SAFELY, driver assessment program. Older adults can gain confidence through our assessment of their driving related skills to ensure that they continue being a safe driver.   If there are complications or issues, recommendations will be made to correct those deficits.

Our highly skilled therapists evaluate and treat deficits found with an individual’s:

  • Vision
  • Balance
  • Gait
  • Cognition
  • Motor function
