Four Ways to Avoid Weight Gain During the Holidays

| Autumn Enloe

The holiday season is in full swing which means temptations are all over the place. This is the time of year where many people get off track with their health goals and find the number on the scale continuously increasing. That’s why “losing weight” is one of the most popular New Year Resolutions!

Don’t let all the holiday food get the best of you. Remember, you’re in charge of your health, and you have the power to avoid weight gain over the holidays, and I’m here to help!

Here are four ways to avoid weight gain during this holiday season:

  1. Downsize your dishware: When we use smaller plates we automatically take smaller portions without even trying. We often eat with our eyes first, so when we use large plates we feel the urge to fill it up. Downsizing your dishware will help prevent overeating and keep your portion sizes appropriate.
  2. Set a limit for sugar: It’s okay to indulge in a treat once in a while, but the problem with the holiday season is that people have a hard time limiting their sugar consumption. Remember, the more sugar we consume the more we crave it. So instead of trying every dessert at a party, set a limit for one or two desserts. That way you get to truly enjoy your treat without the guilt and weight gain.
  3. Avoid saving calories: Have you ever skipped a meal so that you could eat whatever you wanted later on in the day? This is called “saving calories” and does more damage than good. When we skip meals our metabolism slows down in order to conserve energy. A slower metabolism means a higher chance for weight gain. Instead, focus on eating a meal or snack every 4 hours to keep your metabolism revved up!
  4. Watch your drink: Do you know what eggnog lattes, candy cane cocoas, or peppermint mochas have in common? They are packed with sugar and calories that leads to weight gain. In fact, a medium sized holiday beverage can have just as much sugar as 3 candy bars! Avoid those holiday beverages because it’s best to eat your calories – not drink them.
