Stick to Your Resolutions!

| Dr. Eva Norman

Many people begin the new year having good intentions of being physically active to get in-shape. Typically, the first leg of the journey goes well and might even feel fun! But, suddenly you begin to cave, hit a wall and your plan to get physically fit has ceased. So, what went wrong?

Disappointment. Maybe you thought, “Hey, this will be easy!” There are a variety of products and even personal trainers who will tell you about “ways to lose weight fast.” Though we want to believe these messages, they are often times untrue. It takes time to see improvement and changes in your body, so don’t get discouraged after only a few weeks—keep at it!

Habit. Humans are creatures of habit. If exercise has not typically been part of your routine, it’s easy to miss a couple days and stop all together. We often get busy and believe we don’t have any time at all to squeeze in a workout, but trust me, you do! Try scheduling a workout time into your calendar and setting alarms on your phone to make exercise part of your routine.

Motivation. There are two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. One has extrinsic motivation when they are driven by external rewards like praise or attention, and intrinsic motivation when they do something strictly because it fulfills them, or is intrinsically rewarding. Having intrinsic motivation is ideal for continual exercise, helping to keep you motivated into February, March, April etc. Once you have committed to those first few months, you will reap external rewards, finding it easier to continue your new lifestyle change.

Making a lifestyle change into a habit can be challenging, but having the right set of tools can aid to your success.  Remember why you started your journey and don’t let disappointment get you down. Aim to make your New Year’s Resolution a habit and work on staying intrinsically motivated. Habits can be hard to form without the right state of mind and the wrong type of motivation can easily set you back. The journey will not be easy, but in the end it will be worth it. Do your research, ask for help and find exercises you enjoy.
