National Nutrition Month

| Nicole Carlson, RD, LD

March and National Nutrition Month are ending so let’s talk more about how we can focus on nutrition throughout all the months of the year. Our society is filled with social media, increased advertising platforms, and consumerism and this can cause some confusion when it comes to nutrition. It’s safe to say most of us know buying into the latest fad diet isn’t ideal but somehow it always seems appealing. The quick fixes or the latest addition to ‘complete’ your diet seem to cloud the goal of overall good nutrition.

This is not to say that some nutrition fads can’t be a part of a healthy diet but how do we establish quality nutrition each day first? And once it’s established, how to do we treat it like a lifelong commitment rather than the latest fashion trend?

First, identify areas of your nutrition that you believe you do well. Make note of these and continue them as you incorporate more healthy habits. Next, come up with one or two areas you think you can improve on and make specific and measurable goals to work towards. These goals need to be something that can be sustainable. An example would be gradually adding one more serving of fruits and vegetables each day until you meet your goal. Another goal you might have is eating at home more regularly and cooking your own food rather than eating out often. Time and schedules can be a huge barrier to this so try to plan your meals ahead of time for the week.

Once you have a good start on a road to healthier nutrition, you might want to start branching out to other nutrition habits to incorporate into your healthier lifestyle. Some examples would be ancient grains in place of refined grains, adding kombucha, sauerkraut or kimchi for improved gut health or substituting more plant-based protein for meat for one meal a week. One of the biggest points to remember is that everyone’s nutrition and health look a little bit different. Find a routine that works for you and makes you feel healthier.

If we start looking at our nutrition and health like we do for financial planning, we may plan for the long haul rather than the latest trend or short-lived benefit. Focus on an overall picture rather than the newest superfood on the market. Getting started is often the hardest part. I’m here to help!
